Power surges…they happen from time to time for various reasons. A Homeowners insurance policy calls a power surge “sudden and accidental damage from artificially generated electrical current.” Wow.
However, the name is not as important as the policy exclusion that follows. Things like tubes, transistors, electrical components, etc. are not covered. Thirty years ago when this language was written, this might keep your television from being covered, but not much else.
Now, think about the modern household. What doesn’t have digital technology built in? Not just the TV, but the surround sound system, DVD player, laptop, tablet, phone…even appliances like the coffeemaker, and washer and dryer contain sensitive circuitry that would not be covered under a standard homeowners contract.
